Getting the sailing yacht ready to go
Getting Your Sailing Yacht Ready: Tips for the Start of the Season
The sailing season is just around the corner and it's time to prepare your sailing yacht for the summer. Proper preparation is not only important for safety on the water, but also for the longevity of your yacht. Here are some essential tasks you should carry out at the start of the season:
- Hull and Deck Cleaning
A thorough cleaning of the hull and deck of your yacht is the first step to getting it ready for the season. Remove deposits of algae, barnacles and dirt to maintain the hydrodynamic efficiency of the hull. Also clean the deck and hatches to free them from sand, salt and other contaminants. Renew the antifouling coating if necessary.
- Checking the Fittings
Check all fittings on your yacht for rust or damage. In particular, inspect the shrouds, stays and tackles for wear and tear. Replace any damaged or worn parts as necessary. Check the through-hull fittings and seacocks.
- Engine and Electrical System Check
Check the engine and electrical system of your yacht to ensure they are functioning properly. Check the shaft bearing for tightness and play. Inspect the rudder bearing for play and check the steering cables or hydraulics. Observe any prescribed replacement intervals for timing belts, V-ribbed belts and other wear parts. Check the oil and fuel levels of the engine and gearbox (saildrive) and replace oil and filters if necessary. Sacrificial anodes should also be renewed depending on their condition. Check the oil level of the hydraulic autopilot. Test the electrical systems, including batteries, charger, lighting and navigation. Check the wiring and mounting of your solar system for damage.
- Sail System Inspection
Check the sails for damage and wear and carry out repairs or replacements as necessary. Also check the halyards and sheets for wear and tear and replace any damaged parts. Clean and service the winches.
- Safety Equipment Check
Make sure your safety equipment is up to date and in good condition. Check your life jackets, life raft, signalling devices and fire extinguishers for functionality and validity.
- Provisions and Equipment
Check your provisions and equipment on board to make sure you have everything you need for a safe and enjoyable sailing trip. Replenish your supplies, check your navigation equipment and ensure you have the necessary tools and spare parts on board.
By carrying out these essential tasks at the start of the season, you ensure that your sailing yacht is in perfect condition and allows you a safe and enjoyable summer on the water. With proper preparation, you can set off into the new season carefree and full of joy.
