Description

The battery balancer balances the state of charge of two 12 V batteries connected in series or of multiple parallel strings of series-connected batteries. If the charging voltage of a 24 V battery system rises above 27 V, the battery balancer activates and compares the voltage of the two series-connected batteries.

The battery balancer draws a current of up to 1 A from the battery (or batteries connected in parallel) with the highest voltage. The resulting difference in charging current then ensures that all batteries adjust to the same charge level.
If necessary, several balancers can be connected in parallel.

A 48 V battery bank can be balanced with three battery balancers.

The problem:

The lifespan of an expensive battery bank can be significantly shortened by an imbalance in the charge status
A battery with a slightly elevated internal leakage current in a 24V or 48V bank of multiple batteries connected in series/parallel will cause that battery and batteries connected in parallel to be undercharged, resulting in overcharging of series-connected batteries. Furthermore, new cells or batteries connected in series should all have the same initial state of charge. Minor differences can be ironed out during the constant voltage phase or equalization charge. However, larger differences will lead to damage due to excessive gassing (caused by overcharging) in batteries with a higher initial state of charge and sulfation (caused by insufficient charging) in batteries with a lower initial state of charge.

The solution:

Battery balancing
The battery balancer balances the charge level of two 12V batteries connected in series or of several parallel strings of batteries connected in series.
When the charging voltage of a 24V battery system rises above 27.3V, the battery balancer activates and compares the voltage of the two batteries connected in series. The battery balancer draws a current of up to 0.7A from the battery (or batteries connected in parallel) with the highest voltage. The resulting difference in charging current then ensures that all batteries adjust to the same state of charge.
If necessary, several balancers can be connected in parallel.
A 48 V battery bank can be balanced with three battery balancers.

LED displays

Green: on (battery voltage > 27.3V)
Orange: lower battery circuit active (deviation > 0.1V)
Orange: upper battery circuit active (deviation > 0.1V)
Red: Alarm (deviation > 0.2V) Remains active until the deviation has decreased to below 0.14V or until the system voltage drops below 26.6V.

Alarm relay

Normally open. Closes when the red LED turns on and opens when the red LED turns off.
Reset alarm
Two connections are available for connecting a push button. When the two connections are connected, the relay is reset.
The "Reset" state remains active until the alarm is over. After that, the relay closes again when a new alarm occurs.
