Getting your sailing yacht ready: Tips for the start of the season

The sailing season is just around the corner, and it's time to prepare your sailing yacht for summer. Proper preparation is not only important for safety on the water, but also for the longevity of your yacht. Here are some essential tasks you should complete at the start of the season:

  1. Hull and deck cleaning

A thorough cleaning of your yacht's hull and deck is the first step in getting it ready for the season. Remove algae, shellfish, and dirt deposits to maintain the hull's hydrodynamic efficiency. Also clean the deck and hatches to remove sand, salt, and other contaminants. Renew the antifouling if necessary.

  1. Checking the fittings

Check all fittings on your yacht for rust or damage. Pay particular attention to the shrouds, stays, and tackles for wear and tear. Replace any damaged or worn parts if necessary. Check the through-hull fittings and seacocks.

  1. Checking the engine and electrical system

Check your yacht's engine and electrical system to ensure they are functioning properly. Check the shaft bearings for leaks and play. Check the rudder bearing for play and check the steering cables or hydraulics. Observe any prescribed replacement intervals for timing belts, V-ribbed belts, and other wear parts. Check the oil and fuel levels in the engine and transmission (saildrive) and replace the oil and filters if necessary. The sacrificial anodes should also be replaced, depending on their condition. Check the oil level in the hydraulic autopilot. Test the electrical systems, including batteries, charger, lighting, and navigation. Check the wiring and mounting of your solar panel system for damage.

  1. Inspection of the sail system

Inspect sails for damage and wear and repair or replace as needed. Also check halyards and sheets for wear and tear and replace any damaged parts. Clean and maintain winches.

  1. Check safety equipment

Make sure your safety equipment is up to date and in good working order. Check your life jackets, life rafts, signaling devices, and fire extinguishers for proper functioning and up-to-date service.

  1. Provisions and equipment

Check your provisions and equipment on board to ensure you have everything you need for a safe and enjoyable sailing trip. Restock your supplies, check your navigation equipment, and make sure you have the necessary tools and spare parts on board.

By completing these necessary tasks at the start of the season, you'll ensure your sailing yacht is in perfect condition and will allow you to enjoy a safe and enjoyable summer on the water. With proper preparation, you can start the new season worry-free and full of joy.
