The Victron Energy Smart BMS 12/200 (MPN BMS210055000) for Victron Smart Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries has been specifically designed for 12V systems with a 12V alternator. It combines a current limiter, battery coupler and battery monitor in one robust and compact solution. The Smart BMS 12/200 monitors and protects each battery cell individually within the battery (or battery bank) and disconnects the alternator, charging sources or DC loads in the event of low/high battery voltage or over-temperature.
The dedicated alternator connector provides current limiting and one-way traffic from the alternator to the battery, allowing any size alternator (and starter battery) to be safely connected to the Smart Lithium Battery and protecting the starter battery from over-discharging. The BMS is equipped with Bluetooth for monitoring and configuration, a remote on / off connector to turn off the BMS (and the system) via a switch and a pre-alarm contact and give a warning signal before the BMS disconnects the battery from the system separates.

Alternator and battery protection

The input current is electronically limited to approx. 90% of the fuse value. A 100A fuse, for example, therefore limits the input current to around 90A. Choosing the right fuse will help protect the LFP battery from excessive charging current (important in case of a low capacity LFP battery). It also protects the alternator from overloading in the case of a high capacity LFP battery bank (most 12V alternators will overheat and fail if operated at maximum output for more than 5 minutes).

Load/battery charger output/input (power supply socket SYSTEM+)

This power supply socket allows the LFP battery to be either charged or discharged (ie via a charger or an inverter) with a maximum continuous current of 200A in both directions. Can also be used as a load output, allowing DC loads to be connected directly to this connector. The connection is short-circuit proof with a peak discharge current of 400A. The Smart BMS ensures that the discharging of the battery is switched off if there is a risk of cell undervoltage. It allows charging through this port, but no charging algorithm can be applied internally.

Lithium-ion battery protection

Excessive input voltages and transients are regulated down to a safe level. The Smart BMS stops charging in case of cell overvoltage or overtemperature. It has three exits: /p>

  • Load Disconnect Output: The load output can be used to control the remote input/output of a battery protector, inverter, DC/DC converter or other loads.
  • Pre-alarm output: The pre-alarm output can be used as a warning when the battery voltage is low and will trip just before the load disconnect output deactivates due to cell undervoltage. It can be used to control a relay, LED or buzzer. It can be configured as a continuous or intermittent signal.
  • Charge Disconnect Output: The output of the charger is normally high and becomes free-floating in the event of imminent cell overvoltage or overtemperature. The "Charger" output can be used to remotely turn on/off a charger, a Cyrix Li charging relay or a Cyrix Li-Ct battery coupler.

A non-inverting or inverting on/off cable may be required.

Remote on/off, also configurable as system on/off

The remote on/off controls charging via the alternator while the BMS functionality remains active regardless of the remote on/off status. The remote control can also be used as a system on/off switch. This can be configured with VictronConnect.
