Attack detection, data analysis and 24/7 monitoring of the NMEA-20000 system of your boat with N2K Protect, the first cyber security tool for boats.

In the case of technically more progressive, integrated and “networked” boats, data security becomes an important topic. Recently known hacks in the automotive industry have shown security gaps in some CAN-based systems.

The NMEA organization has reacted to this threat and set up a working group for cyber security to determine and reduce the risks of attacks on maritime traffic.

N2K Protect is the world's first NMEA 2000 security system, which was concentrated on NMEA 2000 and developed as part of this NMEA initiative.

N2K Protect is a self -contained, fed -up black box that receives and analyzes all NMEA 2000 network data. She has three main functions:

Test and validate the NMEA 2000 network during installation
-Tools for the NMEA 2000 configuration and network monitoring/analysis
- Continuous monitoring and protection around the clock during the entire lifespan of the ship

Installation tests and Canhot ™
N2K Protect conducts the following device certifications, network topographies and general tests:
Certified devices -This test queries all devices in the network and checks whether you are listed in the NMEA 2000 Certified Product Database. Non-certified devices are identified because they are a possible cause of network errors and interoperability problems. The identified devices can continue to be used in the network, but it is recommended to ensure that they work correctly and do not cause network problems.
Name check -This test scans the NMEA name (64-bit nation number) of each device in the network and reports all non-standard or faulty NMEA names that could indicate a malignant device. All reported devices should be examined immediately and removed from the network.
Gateway validation-Gateways are a potential weak point in an NMEA 2000 network and can enable hackers to feed malignant data or control a network. For this reason, N2K Protect can identify and validate any NMEA 2000 gateway in the system.
Double device bumps - Several devices on the Internet that use the same class and functional codes and the same device in the device can cause problems when identifying the data source and used for fake data to be used. With this test, all duplicates are identified and the instance configuration tool can be used to assign a clear device incorporation to a double device.
Double pgns- Several devices that spend double PGNs can cause problems when choosing the data source and lead to some devices to display incorrect or no data. With this test, double PGNs are identified and the tool to change the command address can be used to change the CAN address of a device and reduce or increase its priority.
Data sources-This test can be used in conjunction with the other network topography tests to determine which devices are automatically selected as the primary data source for GNSS, depth, wind, boat speed and course. Based on the PGNs you issue and your CAN address, N2K Protect identifies the devices that are the primary data sources and the tool to change the command address can be used to change which device is the primary data source.
Devices that spend “no data” -This test checks all devices that output navigation pgns with “no data” in the key field. H. which transmits a deep pgn with the deep field “no data”. If a device spends no data with a higher priority, this can lead to the data of the device you want to use.
Product firmware audit-This test queries each device in the network and creates a simple list of firmware version, which is specified in the product information PGN of the respective device. This is useful to check whether all devices in the network are up to date or whether a firmware update has been carried out and caused problems since the current CANSHOT ™ has been included.
Overall-This test queries the LEN value of all devices on the network and calculates the total value for the network. This can be useful to ensure that the network is correctly designed and structured and does not suffer from waste waste or falsification of data.

As soon as the installation tests are completed and the installer is satisfied with the network performance, the Canhot option is executed. This makes a “snapshot” of the network and stores the results internally. This report can also be saved and printed.

N2K Protect then passes into 24/7 monitoring mode and warns acoustically and saves warnings in an event log for analysis. When connected to a digital yacht 4GXTREAM or 5G XTREAM system Can be activated optionally SMS warnings for remote monitoring.

Configuration and data tools
The NMEA 2000 Safety System N2K Protect also offers the following configuration and data analysis tools:
Configuration information programming-Allows you to change the configuration information text in all devices. Not all devices support this function, but it is now prescribed in the N2K specification and is therefore becoming increasingly important.
Instance configuration-If the device firm of an N2K device does not change all devices, but most engine gateways and devices that use instances do so.
Commanded Address Change- enables the address of a device; All devices should support this to meet the certification standards
Network tank list -shows a list of devices in the network with address, manufacturer name, CAN name, class and function
PGN list -shows PGN number and source with a time stamp, description with drilldown data
Data recording - Create and save a complete data log with binary raw data
